i liked this bit of dialogue from hitchcock's shadow of a doubt. detective jack has gone undercover to pay a visit to the newton family in santa rosa, under the pretext that he wants to interview and photograph a typical american family. he is there, in fact, to determine if young charlie's idolized uncle (also named charlie) has murdered several rich widows in new york city. this is complicated by the fact that jack is falling in love with young charlie.

[Young Charlie – female ]: You know, you’re picking us as an average family kind of gave me a funny feeling.

[Detective Jack ]: What kind of a funny feeling?

[YC ]: Oh, I don’t know... I guess I don’t like to be an average girl in an average family.

[DJ ]: Average families are the best! Look at me – I’m from an average family.

[YC ]: As average as ours?

[DJ ]: Sure… Besides, I don’t think you're average.
