ABSTRACT POETRY @ The Caledonian School, Prague, 2001
Upper-intermediate students: Michail Kourotchine, Tomas Holan, Daniella Slavitsova, Petr Przhetsechtyel, Zuzana Letakova, Jan Vondrash, Sharka Kouklova, Brania Zavidilova
Each student wrote a poem inspired by a piece of abstract art (not of their own choosing). They chose a single word to represent their overall impression, and that word dictated the structure and length of the poem. The students read the finished poems aloud and tried to guess which one was connected to each art piece.
Weirdness
When I see that picture
Either whole or mixture
I must feel quite sick
Rather from coal brick
Damned one my masterpiece is
Nothing more than night flood
Either the coal or some blood
Sins which were forgiven
Some letters then were given
Weirdness
Happiness
Honor the simplicity
And green, blue, red on the sea
Past was my future
Present was my past
Irresistible view
Never-ending blue
Even though depth is limited
Selfishness is inside
Strength exists, you can feel it
Happiness
Desperate
Darkness and cold
Everyone is tired
Sad and lonely
Prayers don't help
Exit out of this place
Rather to be dead
And no one listens to them
Tragedy of life
Entrance to the other world
Desperate
Melancholy
My darling left me
Even though he promised me
Living together forever
And sadness is so heavy also
Never-ending
Charles, please come back
(How can he?)
Or I will suffer 'till the death
Love was so strong, we were
Young and happy, why did you destroy our happiness?
Melancholy
Liberating
Lady, young one looking at one, who
Inhaling smoke and
Bad habit having
Exotic environment live in
Religious culture
Affected by other
Tenderness and beauty
Innocent and untouched
Naked and uncovered
Girl young, legs on lawn having
Liberating
Harmonic
Happy feelings I get while looking
Approach to a modern conception of art
Rose color, let us feel in harmony
Monumental fire burns from inside
Only white line can bring us to a place of never-ending silence
Nightly symbol contrasts with the white moonlight
Incredible and fantastic
Cocktail of beautiful ideas
Harmonic
Freakish
Frame of mind of the author
Ready to do something
Eccentric
And it
Keeps
In your mind
Such a strange picture
Hope not to wake up your frustration
Freakish
Oppressive
One thick green line
Painted in the ocean of blue
Pushing the
Red and the bluish one to the bottom
Eager to escape altogether from your
Sidelong
Sight
In a
Vain
Effort
Oppressive
